XXXIX General Assembly of BEST - Istanbul Yildiz 2020

The General Assembly of BEST is an annual 7-day summit where the leaders of all the 93 Local BEST Groups and delegates of international teams gather to discuss and decide on the future of the organisation, evaluate and celebrate the year’s achievements across all the projects. It’s a vibrant event attended by almost 300 volunteers of BEST from 34 countries.

The Official Opening Day is a conference dedicated to gathering all BEST stakeholders around a theme, relevant to BEST mission’s and to society. The day aims to foster collaboration between the stakeholders, inspire action, and provide a space for engagement between companies, institutions and students.

The Opening Conference

In today’s ever-changing society, we believe in the responsibility and opportunity that scientists and engineers, as well as businesses and universities, have in addressing important societal challenges. That’s why, this year, the projects and services of BEST are focusing on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Throughout the Opening Conference, the different actors will showcase and discuss their efforts and viewpoints on the SDGs and the role of STEM students and companies in fulfilling them. It’s a unique and exclusive opportunity for our partners to engage with young talented students from over 34 countries.

Date & Place

This year, the General Assembly will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. The Opening Conference will take place on Friday 24th of April 2020 in Istanbul Yildiz Technical University.

Opening & Keynotes

To kick-start the day and set the stage for sharing, the President of BEST, Organisers of the General Assembly 2020, and local authorities will deliver welcoming speeches to the attendees.

SDGs are a global effort, and as such, they concern all citizens and institutions. To spark the engagement of the attendees, various partners of BEST will have the chance to deliver keynotes and share their efforts and perspectives regarding the Global Goals. What is at stake? And how business operations will differ in the Decade of Action?

All speeches will be live-streamed on BEST social media channels.

Keynotes Duration: 15 minutes per speaker.

After the initial keynotes, a series of parallel workshops, lasting 90 mins each and delivered by various industry partners and institutions focused on the SDGs will take place. Each workshop will gather 20-30 international STEM students interested in the topic. It’s a chance for our partners to engage with a targeted set of students on a specific topic.

Workshop Duration: 90 mins per workshop.

Discussion Panel

This vibrant conversation, entitled “STEM Education in the 4th Industrial Revolution”, will gather thought leaders from the public and private sector and bring to the table the experiences and perspectives of the various stakeholders of BEST on the future of education and its connection with the future of work. The Panel will see engaged hundreds of students through in-room questions and will be live-streamed online on our social media channels to the entire network of BEST.

The key outcomes and perspectives of this discussion panel will feed a session on the same topic, which will be held by BEST in the European Parliament in Strasbourg at the end of May 2020, during the biennial European Youth Event.

Panel Duration: 90 mins.

Networking Fair

The Global Goals and future actions will depend on the cooperation between the various stakeholders. While the whole day aims to foster perspectives sharing and exchange, this session is specifically designed to enable informal connection between the attendees of the event, whether they are students, professors, company representatives or public institutions.
